In 1997, Kara started the Black Hills High School volleyball program from scratch. The first season ended at the State tournament with a 5th place trophy. During her tenure, Black Hills went to state 12 times, earned 7 league titles, won 4 district championships, and she earned Coach of the Year selection 6 times. Most recently, she headed the rebuilding of the Saint Martin’s University volleyball program, serving as head coach for three seasons, 2013-15. A four-year letter winner at UW she was a Co-Captain for the Huskies, and continues to hold the Single Match Record for Aces. Kara graduated with a B.A. in History and Political Science. After graduation she served as a graduate assistant at UW and the University of Texas-Arlington. She went on to earn a Master’s degree in Education and has worked for many years as an educator and coach. She works as a teacher/teacher consultant at ORLA. She has been married to husband Jon T. Peterson since 1986, and has two kids, Brenna and Karl.
Mieka attended North Thurston High School, lettering all four years. She then played at Saint Martin’s University. In 2002, Mieka started assisting at North Thurston with Head Coach, Micah McBride. In 2005, she became an Assistant Coach at Saint Martin’s. In 2008, she returned to North Thurston, to coach again as a volunteer. Throughout her time coaching at both the high school and collegiate levels, she also coached 6 seasons of club volleyball. She is very for another season of teaching and mentoring the young athletes in our area. Her goal is to show them that through hard work, passion, and perseverance they can accomplish whatever they put their mind to.
